Had these guys come round to sort some new lighting and power points. Super easy to deal with, showed up on time, no fuss, and cleaned up after. Proper quality job, would 100% get them back again.

Sound familiar?

Signs a ceiling fan needs fixing or replacing

Some of these are just annoying. However, others mean a loose mount or an overheating motor, and those need fixing before they get worse.

Wobbling or shaking

When a fan wobbles on high, it usually has a loose bracket, mount or blade. Keep it on low until it’s checked.

Burning smell from the fan

Because a hot or burning smell points to a failing motor or a loose connection, switch it off at the wall and call us.

Safety switch trips

A fault inside a fan can trip the safety switch. On an Eight Mile Plains job, the lights kept tripping because of a faulty bedroom fan.

Noisy, clicking or humming

Worn bearings and old AC motors get louder with age. Replacing it with a quiet DC ceiling fan is often the answer, especially in a bedroom.

Stuck on one speed

A failing controller, capacitor or remote receiver can leave a fan stuck on one speed or not starting at all. In that case, we test it first, then repair or replace the faulty part.

Fan light flickers

A flickering fan light is often a loose connection or a failing light kit. We find which one, then fix it.

Fan smoking, sparking or hanging loose?

Switch it off at the wall, keep everyone out from under it, and turn that circuit off at the switchboard if it’s safe to do so. Then call us. If there’s smoke or fire, get out and call 000 first.

Cost and quoting

How ceiling fan installation cost is worked out

Ceiling fan installation cost in Brisbane depends on whether there’s already a fan or light point, the ceiling and roof access, and whether you’re supplying the fan. So we get a few details or look first, then give you one price for the install and testing. Nothing starts until you approve it.

1

Replacing a ceiling fan or light

Replacing an old fan, or turning a ceiling light into a fan, uses the cable already there. As long as the mount is sound, it’s the simplest job.

2

What pushes the price up

A new fan point with no cable, no roof access, a high or raked ceiling that needs an extension rod, no joist where the fan needs to go, or a new wall controller.

3

What keeps it down

Easy roof access, an existing fan or light point, and several fans done in one visit. Also, adding lights or smoke alarms on the same trip saves a second call-out.

Outdoor ceiling fan installation

A covered alfresco or patio still gets humid air and wind-driven rain, so an outdoor fan has to be rated for it. We fit an outdoor-rated fan, mount it to the framing, seal the fitting and check the circuit has safety switch protection. It’s also a good time to add outdoor downlights, because we’re already in the ceiling.

How it works

How ceiling fan installation works, step by step.

01

Pick the fan and the spot

First, we talk through the room size, the ceiling height and whether you want a light, a remote or a wall controller. Also, you can supply the fan, or we can suggest one.

02

Price agreed

Then you get one clear price for the install, the mount and the testing. Nothing starts until you say yes.

03

Mount and wire

Next, we isolate the circuit, check the joist or fit a noggin, then mount the bracket and wire the fan, the light and the controls.

04

Test and tidy up

After that, we run the fan on every speed and in both directions and check it runs true. Finally, we clean up and take the old fan away if you want.

What we do

Ceiling fan installation, replacement and repairs

Generally, most Brisbane fan jobs fall into one of these four. In short, here’s what each one covers.

New fans where there wasn’t one

Adding a fan where there’s only a light, or where there’s nothing at all. First, we find a solid mount, then run the cable through the roof space and add a wall controller if you want one.

What it includes

  • Fans where only a light was before
  • New fan points with new cable
  • Wall controllers and remote setups
  • Noggins fitted where there’s no joist
  • Fans we supply, or ones you’ve bought
  • Every fan tested on every speed

Ceiling fan replacement

Old, noisy or wobbling ceiling fans replaced with new ones. Usually we reuse the existing cable, but we still check the mount, the connections and the cable before the new fan goes up.

What it includes

  • Old AC ceiling fans replaced with quiet DC fans
  • Mount and cable checked on every swap
  • Fan lights and light kits fitted
  • Old fans taken away on request

Fan repairs and faults

A fan that won’t start, sticks on one speed, flickers or trips the safety switch needs testing before anything is replaced. So we find the cause first, then tell you whether a repair or a ceiling fan replacement makes more sense.

What it includes

  • Fans that won’t start or stick on one speed
  • Flickering fan lights
  • Fans tripping the safety switch
  • Remote and receiver faults

Outdoor and high-ceiling fans

Alfresco areas, patios and decks need an outdoor-rated fan. Meanwhile, high and raked ceilings need the right extension rod, so the fan sits where it actually moves air.

What it includes

  • Outdoor-rated fans for alfresco and patio ceilings
  • Extension rods for high and raked ceilings
  • Sealed fittings on outdoor linings
  • Circuits checked for safety switch protection

Good to know

Can I install a ceiling fan myself in Queensland?

No. In Queensland, installing or replacing a ceiling fan is electrical work, because it connects to your home’s fixed wiring. So it has to be done by a licensed electrical contractor. DIY electrical work is illegal, it can affect your home insurance, and a fan that isn’t mounted properly can come down. You can check any electrician’s licence through WorkSafe Queensland. Ours is 90386.

How high should a ceiling fan be?

The blades need to sit at least 2.1 metres above the floor. Therefore, most fans on a standard 2.4 metre ceiling are close-mounted. On high or raked ceilings, we use an extension rod, so the fan sits lower and moves more air. We also check the blades clear walls, doors and top bunks.

AC or DC ceiling fan: which is better?

DC fans are usually quieter, use less power and have more speeds, and most come with a remote. So they make a good pick for bedrooms. However, AC fans cost less up front and suit a simple wall controller. Either way, we check your cable and controls suit the fan you choose. If you’re planning a renovation, that’s the easiest time to add fan points, because the ceilings are open.

Yes. Installing or replacing a ceiling fan is electrical work in Queensland, because it connects to fixed wiring. It must be done by a licensed electrician and tested. DIY fan installation isn’t legal, and it can cause safety and insurance problems.

Yes. We install plenty of customer-supplied fans. Just check it suits the room and, for outdoor areas, that it’s rated for outdoor use. If you haven’t bought one yet, we’re happy to suggest a size and type.

Usually, yes. The light point already has cable, so we check the cable and the joist, fit a fan-rated mount and wire in the fan. If there’s no joist in the right spot, we fit a noggin to carry it.

The blades need to be at least 2.1 metres above the floor. On standard ceilings we close-mount the fan. On high or raked ceilings, we use an extension rod so it sits at a comfortable height.

It depends on the room size and layout. Smaller bedrooms suit a compact fan, while big living areas often need a larger fan or two. So we can look at each room and suggest sizes that work.

Both work. Wall controllers are simple and hard to lose, while remotes suit bedrooms. Some fans do both. So we’ll set up whichever suits how you use each room.

Usually it’s a loose mount, an unbalanced blade or worn bearings. We check the mount first, then tighten and balance the fan. If it’s at the end of its life, we’ll tell you if a ceiling fan replacement makes more sense.

Yes. We install outdoor-rated fans for covered decks, patios and alfresco areas. For example, on a recent Hemmant job we fitted an alfresco fan and four downlights. We also check the fan suits the spot and the mount and cable are right for outdoors.

Yes, if you’d like us to. Just tell us when you book. On a recent Annerley ceiling fan replacement, we removed three old fans and took them away.
