There’s no honest one-size price for a switchboard upgrade. Instead, the cost depends on the size of the board, how many circuits you have, where it’s mounted and what we find when we test the wiring. That’s why we inspect first, then give you one fixed price for the whole job: the new board, circuit breakers, safety switch protection on every circuit, testing, labelling and your certificate. Nothing starts until you approve it.

What pushes the price up
More circuits, RCBOs on each circuit instead of shared RCDs, a hard-to-reach board, and old cabling that fails testing. Then we explain each one in the quote.

What keeps it down
A board in a good, accessible spot and cabling that tests well. Also, doing smoke alarms or extra power points on the same visit saves a second call-out.
Things that can add to the job
Some older boards are mounted on asbestos backing, and it often only shows up once we start taking the old board apart. If we find it, we stop work on that part and a licensed asbestos removalist takes over. Coordinating the removal is an extra charge, and we talk you through it before anything goes ahead. If the meter panel needs work, we do our part of the job and leave it ready for your metering provider to finish theirs.
Recent Brisbane switchboard jobs:
- Slacks Creek: the hot water circuit was on an old 10A breaker with no safety switch. We fitted a new 20A RCBO on the switchboard, added an isolator at the heater, then tested the circuit.
- Corinda: a power point fault led us to the old ceramic fuse board. We found burnt fuse wire, and the safety switch it fed failed its trip test, so we replaced the safety switch and retested the circuits.
- Acacia Ridge: the main switch had tripped and wouldn’t turn back on. We traced it to a faulty 4-pole RCBO, replaced it, then checked every circuit was back on and the board was closed.
- Wishart: the consumer mains were flagged as defective after a network inspection. We ran new mains underground in conduit and fitted steel covers where the run is exposed.

Next, we isolate the supply, pull the old board, fit the new one and reconnect each circuit. Power is off for part of the day, so we keep you posted.

After that come RCD trip-time tests, continuity and insulation checks, labelling and load balance. Finally, we only hand the board back once every device tests within safe limits.

Ceramic fuse board to circuit breakers
Ceramic fuse boards are still common in Brisbane homes built before the 1980s. They rely on fuse wire that can be fitted at the wrong rating, they give no safety switch cover, and they also struggle with a modern household’s load. So we remove the old board and fit a new one with individual breakers and RCD cover across every circuit.

For example, plenty of Brisbane homes have only partial cover: power circuits on an RCD and lighting on nothing. Good to know
Can I upgrade my switchboard without rewiring?
Usually, yes. That’s because a switchboard upgrade replaces the board and its protection. It doesn’t, however, replace the cables running through your walls and roof. During the upgrade, we also test every circuit, and if the existing wiring tests well, it stays.
However, some older Queenslanders still have original rubber-insulated cable that fails insulation testing. That wiring has to be dealt with, because a new safety switch will keep tripping on it. What is the standard for new switchboards?
New electrical work in Australia has to meet AS/NZS 3000, the Wiring Rules. For homes, in particular, that means safety switch (RCD) protection on the final circuits, including lighting as well as power. That’s why a switchboard upgrade usually adds protection your old board never had.
Switchboard rules in Queensland
In Queensland, switchboard work must be done by a licensed electrical contractor. It’s notifiable work, and it has to be tested before it’s handed over.
Thousands of Brisbane homes still run on boards fitted 40 to 60 years ago, often with no RCD cover at all. For the full detail, the Electrical Safety Office also explains the safety switch rules.

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in Brisbane?
In short, it depends on the board. Its size, the number of circuits, where it’s mounted and how the wiring tests all change the price, so we don’t guess over the phone. We inspect the board, then give you one fixed price covering the board, breakers, safety switches on every circuit, testing and labelling. You approve it before anything starts.
Do I need to upgrade my switchboard?
If you’ve got ceramic fuses, no safety switches (or only one), constant tripping, no room for new circuits, or a board that’s warm or buzzing, then yes, get it looked at.
Can I upgrade my switchboard without rewiring?
Usually. We test every circuit during the upgrade, and wiring that tests well stays. However, wiring that fails, often old rubber cable in Queenslanders, gets priced separately before we touch it.
How long does a switchboard upgrade take?
Most switchboard upgrades on a standard Brisbane home take 6 to 8 hours, depending on the size of the board and the scope of work. A comprehensive job, like a big board with a lot of new circuits, can run over more than one day. We’ll also give you the power-off window with your quote.
Will my power be off during the upgrade?
Yes, for part of the day while the old board comes out and the new one goes in. We keep it as short as we can and tell you when it’s back on. Most people stay home, so just keep the fridge closed and charge laptops first.
Are old ceramic fuses illegal?
An existing fuse board isn’t automatically illegal. But it gives no safety switch protection, the fuse wire can be replaced with the wrong rating, and any new work on the board has to meet current standards. That’s why most get replaced eventually.
What’s the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?
A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload and shorts. A safety switch (RCD), on the other hand, protects people by cutting power fast when current leaks to earth. A modern board has both, and an RCBO combines them in one device.
