Signs your smoke alarms need replacing
Most homes we visit for smoke alarm installation have at least one of these. Some mean the alarms may not wake you in time. Others, however, mean the house isn’t compliant yet.
Older than 10 years
Check the date on the back or side. Once a smoke alarm passes 10 years, it has to be replaced, even if it still beeps when you test it.
Chirping every minute or so
A short chirp usually means a flat backup battery or an alarm at the end of its life. Either way, it needs attention.
Only one alarm goes off
Press test and only that alarm sounds? Then they aren’t interconnected. Under the Queensland rules, they all need to sound together.
No alarm in the bedrooms
Older homes often have one alarm in the hallway and nothing else. Now every bedroom needs its own.
Ionisation type alarms
Ionisation alarms don’t meet the Queensland rules. Photoelectric alarms are better at picking up the slow, smouldering fires that start at night.
False alarms from cooking or steam
An alarm too close to the kitchen or bathroom, or one full of dust, goes off for no reason. So people pull the battery, and that’s when it gets dangerous.

More bedrooms and levels, new hardwired alarms where there’s no cabling yet, a tight or hot roof space, or a two-storey home where cable has to get between floors.

Existing hardwired cabling we can reuse, easy roof access, and 10-year battery alarms where hardwiring isn’t needed. Also, doing safety switches or other small jobs on the same visit saves a second call-out.
Hardwired or 10-year battery smoke alarms?
If your home already has hardwired alarms, the replacements must be hardwired too. We fit new 240V alarms with a backup battery, then link them with interconnect cable or wireless RF modules. Where there’s no mains cabling, 10-year lithium battery alarms that link wirelessly are allowed, and they’re often the tidier choice in older homes. Either way, every alarm in the house has to sound together. We’ll tell you which suits your home when we quote.

Queensland smoke alarm laws: what’s needed by 2027
By 1 January 2027, every existing home, townhouse and unit in Queensland needs compliant smoke alarms, and homes being sold or leased already have to comply. Under the Queensland Fire Department rules, the alarms must be photoelectric, meet AS 3786-2014, have no ionisation sensor, and be interconnected so they all go off together. They go in every bedroom, in the hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey. Also, alarms must be replaced once they’re 10 years old.
Interconnected smoke alarms: hardwired or wireless?
Interconnected means when one alarm picks up smoke, every alarm in the house sounds. As a result, people at the other end of the home get time to get out. For example, hardwired alarms can be linked with interconnect cable or with RF modules, while 10-year battery alarms link wirelessly. Many homes end up with a mix, which is fine as long as they all talk to each other.
Why is my smoke alarm beeping?
A single chirp every 30 to 60 seconds is almost always a low battery or an alarm at the end of its life. On a hardwired alarm with a replaceable battery, a fresh battery usually stops it. If it keeps chirping, check the date on the alarm. Near 10 years old means it’s due for replacement. On the other hand, a full alarm with no smoke usually means dust, steam or a faulty unit.

In our experience, hardwired alarms with a backup battery are the most reliable long-term option. Still, our smoke alarm installation covers both types.
Why is my smoke alarm beeping?

Why does my smoke detector keep beeping after I change the battery?
Often the alarm itself has reached the end of its life, so check the date on it. Some alarms also need a reset after a battery change, usually by holding the test button. If it still chirps after that, the alarm needs replacing.
Do I need an electrician to replace a hardwired smoke alarm?
Yes. Hardwired alarms connect to 240V, so replacing them or changing their wiring is electrical work that must be done by a licensed electrician in Queensland. Battery-only alarms you can fit yourself.
How many smoke alarms does my home need?
One in every bedroom, one in each hallway that connects bedrooms to the rest of the home, and at least one on every storey. So a three-bedroom, single-storey home usually needs at least four. We confirm the exact number when we quote.
Do you give a smoke alarm compliance certificate?
Yes. After every install we test all the alarms together, then give you a written certificate confirming they meet the current Queensland requirements. It’s handy for your records, and when you sell or lease the property.
How often should smoke alarms be tested and replaced?
Press the test button on each alarm every month. Also, vacuum the dust off them every six months or so. Finally, replace every alarm once it’s 10 years old, or sooner if it fails a test.
