Signs your LED strip lighting needs an electrician
Some LED strip problems are just annoying. However, others point to an undersized driver, a loose connection or water getting into a wet area fitting, and those need fixing before they get worse.
Strip trips the safety switch
Water getting into an outdoor or bathroom fitting is a common cause, especially where the driver sits in a damp spot. So switch it off and call us.
Driver box hot or smells of burning
Because a hot or burning smell around the driver or a connector means it’s overloaded or failing, switch it off at the wall and call us.
Bare wire or a scorched connector
An exposed join or a scorched connector behind cabinetry or joinery is a fire risk. So stop using that circuit until it’s checked.
Strip flickering or buzzing on the dimmer
Flickering usually means the dimmer doesn’t suit the driver, or a connection has come loose along the run.
Colour uneven along the run
A patchy or dimming colour partway along a long run often means the driver is undersized, or the run is too long for the load.
Old stick-on strip looking tired
Cheap plug-in tape that’s yellowed, peeling or running off a wall adapter is worth upgrading to a proper hardwired install.
Strip sparking, smoking or hanging loose?
Switch it off at the wall, and turn that circuit off at the switchboard if it’s safe to do so. Then call us. If there’s smoke or fire, get out and call 000 first.

Upgrading old stick-on strip lighting
Swapping tired plug-in tape for a proper hardwired strip in a channel is a common upgrade, because the power is usually already nearby. Even so, we still check the driver, the connections and the mounting surface.

What pushes the price up
For example, long runs, IP65 or IP67 tape for wet or outdoor zones, no power nearby, smart or app-controlled setups, and colour-changing strip for a commercial fit-out.

Outdoor LED strip lighting
Brisbane sun, humidity and storms are hard on cheap tape and poorly sealed drivers, so outdoor LED strip lighting needs the right product for the job. For decks, pergolas and alfresco areas, we fit IP67-rated tape, UV-stable channel and a weatherproof driver enclosure, and run any exposed cable in conduit. We also check the circuit has safety switch protection. For example, in Camp Hill we fitted 5 m of warm white LED strip under a cafe’s outdoor countertop, on the same visit as the ceiling festoon lighting.

Next, we cut the channel to length, size the driver with some headroom, then wire it to AS/NZS 3000 and fit the diffuser and end caps.

Kitchen and under-cabinet LED strip lighting
LED strip lighting installation under kitchen cabinets, in shelving and along benchtops. First, we mount the tape in an aluminium channel with a diffuser, so the light is even and the strip stays out of sight.

Good to know
Is DIY LED strip lighting legal in Queensland?
It depends on the strip. A plug-in or USB-powered strip kit is DIY. However, any strip wired into your home’s fixed 240 V wiring or the switchboard is electrical work under Queensland’s Electrical Safety Act 2002, so it has to be done by a licensed electrical contractor. DIY wiring is illegal, it can affect your home insurance, and a badly wired driver can overheat. You can check any electrician’s licence through WorkSafe Queensland. Ours is 90386.
What is an LED driver, and do I need one?
An LED driver converts your home’s 240 V supply to the low-voltage DC power the strip actually needs, usually 12 V or 24 V. Every fixed strip needs one, sized for the length of the run with some headroom, and placed somewhere it can be reached later rather than sealed behind cabinetry. The driver also decides which dimmers and smart controls will work, so we match it to what you want the strip to do.
Warm white, cool white or RGBW?
Warm white feels softer, so it suits bedrooms, bedheads and living areas. Cool white is crisper, so it suits kitchens and garages. RGBW strip adds a dedicated white channel, so the white light doesn’t look blue-tinted the way plain colour-mixed white can. If your strip flickers on a dimmer, the dimmer may not suit the driver, and matching the two usually fixes it. If you’re planning a renovation, that’s the easiest time to run strip lighting into new joinery, because the cavity is open.

IP stands for Ingress Protection, and it rates how well the tape resists water and dust. IP65 suits bathroom splash zones and sheltered outdoor spots. IP67 covers exposed outdoor runs, and IP68-rated tape is used around pools where it may be submerged. We use the correct rating for each location.
Can LED strip lighting be installed outdoors in Brisbane?
Yes, but the product has to suit our weather. We use IP67-rated tape, UV-stable channel, a weatherproof driver enclosure and conduit for the cable, so the strip handles Queensland sun, humidity and storms.
How long does LED strip lighting last?
Good quality tape lasts for years, but the driver usually fails first, somewhere between 30,000 and 50,000 hours. Sizing the driver correctly and giving it room to ventilate helps it last as long as it should.
What is RGBW LED strip lighting?
RGBW strip has a red, green and blue chip plus a separate white chip. That dedicated white channel gives a clean warm or cool white, instead of the slightly blue tint you get from mixing red, green and blue to make white light.
Can you fit LED strip lighting on stairs?
Yes, we fit it in a channel under the tread or the nosing, so each step gets even light without a visible fitting showing. The driver goes somewhere it can be reached later, not sealed up behind the stringer.
Do you install LED strip lighting under kitchen cabinets?
Yes, we fit the strip in a channel with a diffuser, in warm or cool white. For example, in Wakerley we installed 4 m of warm white COB LED strip in a channel under the kitchen cabinets.
Can LED strip lighting go behind a TV or on a feature wall?
Yes, we run it in a channel along the back of the unit or the wall recess, and it can be put on a dimmer or hard-wired smart control if you want to change the colour or brightness from your phone.
