Signs a power point needs replacing
Some of these are just annoying. However, others mean a connection behind the plate is overheating, and that needs fixing before it gets worse.
Scorch marks or a burning smell
Brown or black marks around the pins, or a hot plastic smell, mean the connection behind the plate is overheating. In that case, stop using it and call us.
Plugs fall out or feel loose
Worn contacts don’t grip the pins properly. As a result, they spark and heat up. In fact, it’s a common find in older Brisbane homes.
Water in an outdoor power point
A cracked cover or an indoor-rated outlet outside lets rain in. In fact, that’s often why the safety switch trips after a storm.
Power boards everywhere
Double adaptors and power boards plugged into each other behind the TV or on the bench mean the room needs more outlets. Instead, a new double power point does the job properly.
Buzzing or crackling
A buzz or crackle when you plug something in usually points to a loose terminal. Because it can overheat, that’s a job for a licensed electrician.
Cracked or broken plates
Cracks in the face or the back of an outlet can expose live parts. For example, on a recent Norman Park job we found four like this.
Power point hot, sparking or smoking?
Stop using it and switch that circuit off at the switchboard if it’s safe to do so. Then call us. If there’s smoke or fire, get out and call 000 first.
Cost and quoting
How power point installation pricing works
Reviewed by MJ, licensed electrician at M-Tech. QLD electrical contractor licence 90386. Updated September 2026.
Power point installation cost in Brisbane depends on how many outlets you need, where the cable has to run and what’s behind the wall. So we look first, then give you one price for the parts, the install and the testing. Nothing starts until you approve it.
1
Look first, then one price
We check the wall, the cable route and the circuit the new outlet will run from. Then you get one clear price.
2
What pushes the price up
Brick or block walls, no roof or underfloor access, a long cable run, a new dedicated circuit, or an outdoor outlet that needs conduit and trenching. These all take longer, so they cost more.
3
What keeps it down
Plasterboard walls with easy roof access, turning a single into a double in the same spot, and doing several outlets in one visit. Also, adding smoke alarms or lights on the same trip saves a second call-out.
Outdoor power point installation
Outdoor power point installation needs a weatherproof outlet with a cover that closes over the plug, mounted where rain and sprinklers won’t sit on it. Also, where cable is exposed, we run it in conduit. For a gate motor, pond pump or pool equipment, we can run a dedicated circuit and mount the outlet on a stand. Finally, every outdoor circuit gets safety switch protection.
Recent power point jobs from our records
Here are some real examples from our job records, with the suburb, what we found and what we did.
Norman Park
FoundTwo indoor power points had cracked rear plastics, and two outdoor ones had faulty terminals.
FixedWe replaced all four, then tested each one.
Taringa
FoundThe safety switch kept tripping. When we checked, there was water inside an outdoor 10A power point.
FixedWe removed it, then fitted a weatherproof outlet.
Hawthorne
FoundThe downstairs power kept tripping. We split up the circuits to trace it. The causes were a water filter, a cable fault and a power point insects had got into.
FixedWe replaced that power point and ran a new feed to the circuit. Then we tested the safety switch from every power point in the house.
Holland Park West
FoundA new gate motor needed power, well away from the house.
FixedWe ran about 15 metres of conduit through a trench, then mounted a weatherproof power point on an in-ground stand.
Virginia
FoundNew pool equipment needed its own power.
FixedWe installed two double weatherproof power points on a new dedicated 16A circuit.
Hawthorne
FoundThe owners asked for a new power point and a sensor flood light.
FixedWe supplied and installed the power point, then fitted an LED flood light with a motion sensor.
Springwood
FoundThe owners wanted every power point and switch in the house refreshed.
FixedWe replaced 14 power points, and the light switches too, with Clipsal Iconic fittings.
Springfield Lakes
FoundPower boards were stacked up behind the TV.
FixedWe added a double power point behind the TV, so the power boards could go.
More power point installation jobs across Brisbane
Annerley
FoundThe power kept tripping because water had got into several power points under the house.
FixedWe dried out each one and secured it, then retested the circuit before turning the power back on.
Acacia Ridge
FoundA warehouse needed a 15 amp power outlet for heavy-duty equipment, and also a new data point.
FixedWe installed a dedicated 15A outlet, then ran 60 metres of Cat6 back to the data rack from a scissor lift.
Bulimba
FoundThe TV in the BBQ area ran off an extension cord. Also, the cabling around it was untidy.
FixedWe installed a power point for the TV so the extension cord could go, then neatened the cabling, using conduit where needed.
Acacia Ridge
FoundThree new power points needed fitting off, since the cables were already run in the walls.
FixedWe supplied and fitted all three, then tested and commissioned each one.

How it works
How power point installation works, step by step.
01
Plan the spots
First, we walk through with you, look at where the power boards and extension cords are now, and mark where new outlets make sense.
02
Price agreed
Then you get one clear price for the outlets, cable and testing. Nothing starts until you say yes.
03
Install
Next, we isolate the circuit, run the cable through the roof or wall cavity and fit the new power points with a small, neat cut-out.
04
Test and tidy up
After that, we test every outlet for polarity, earth continuity and insulation resistance. Finally, we clean up and show you which circuit each one is on.
What we do
Power point installation, replacement and upgrades
Generally, most Brisbane jobs fall into one of these four. In short, here’s what each one covers.
New and extra power points
Most homes were wired before phones, laptops and a TV in every room. So we add outlets behind the TV, beside the bed, along the kitchen bench, in the home office and in the garage, and the power boards can go.
What it includes
- Single, double and quad power points
- Dedicated outlets for fridges, dishwashers and washing machines
- Home office, gaming and media wall setups
- Garage, shed and workshop outlets
- Circuit load checked before we add to it
- Every outlet tested before we leave
USB power points and designer plates
USB power points charge phones and tablets straight from the wall, so the regular sockets stay free. They suit bedsides, kitchen benches and desks. Also, if you want everything to match, we can fit slimline or designer ranges, or match what you already have.
What it includes
- USB-A and USB-C combination outlets
- Slimline and designer ranges
- Matched to your existing style where possible
- Light switches changed to match too, on the same visit
Power point replacement: old, cracked or loose
Cracked, scorched or loose power points can overheat and spark. Therefore, we replace them, check the terminals and cable behind the plate, and test the circuit. That way the problem is fixed, not just covered up.
What it includes
- Cracked, scorched or loose outlets replaced
- Terminals and cable checked behind the plate
- Whole-home power point replacements
- Circuit tested again when we finish
Outdoor and weatherproof power points
Decks, patios, pool equipment, gate motors and garden tools all need power that can handle the weather. For this reason, we fit weatherproof outlets, run cable in conduit where it’s exposed and add a dedicated circuit when the load needs one.
What it includes
- Weatherproof outlets with closing covers
- Conduit and trenching for runs away from the house
- Outlets on stands for gate motors and pumps
- Safety switch protection on every outdoor circuit

Can I install a power point myself in Queensland?
No. In Queensland, adding, moving or replacing a power point is electrical work, so it has to be done by a licensed electrical contractor. DIY electrical work is illegal, it can affect your home insurance, and one wrong connection can leave the metal case of an appliance live. Before you book anyone, you can check their licence through WorkSafe Queensland. Ours is 90386.
Do new power points need safety switch protection?
Yes. Under AS/NZS 3000, the Wiring Rules, new or altered power circuits in a home need safety switch protection. So before we add an outlet, we check that circuit at your switchboard. If it isn’t protected, we’ll explain the options, and a safety switch can usually go in on the same visit. If the board has no room left, a switchboard upgrade may be the better fix.
How many power points does a room need?
There’s no set number, but as a guide, a bedroom wants a double power point on each side of the bed, a living room wants a few behind the TV, and a kitchen wants several along the bench. Also, if you’re relying on power boards, that’s the sign a room needs more. Adding outlets during a kitchen or bathroom renovation is the easiest time, because the walls are already open.
At a glance
- What it is: new, extra, USB and outdoor power points, plus replacing old or damaged ones.
- How it’s priced: one price after we’ve seen the wall and the cable route. Nothing starts until you approve it.
- How long: a single power point is usually quick. However, outdoor runs and new circuits take longer, and we’ll tell you with the quote.
- Testing: polarity, earth continuity and insulation resistance on every outlet.
- Who turns up: a licensed, insured M-Tech electrician (QLD licence 90386).

Power point questions, answered.
Something specific? Then call 1800 549 545 and ask an electrician.
How much does power point installation cost in Brisbane?
It depends on the wall, the cable route and whether the circuit can take the extra load. So we look first, then give you one price for the parts, install and testing. You approve it before anything starts.
Can I install or replace a power point myself?
No. In Queensland, installing, moving or replacing a fixed power point must be done by a licensed electrician. Besides being illegal, DIY work on outlets and wiring can be very dangerous, even when it looks simple.
What is the benefit of USB power points?
USB power points let you charge phones, tablets and other devices straight from the wall without bulky chargers. As a result, the regular sockets stay free for appliances, and benches and bedside tables look tidier. Kitchens, bedrooms and home offices are the most popular spots.
How many devices can I run from one power point?
It depends on what’s plugged in and the rating of the circuit. For example, high-draw appliances like heaters, dryers and microwaves should usually have their own outlet. Also, we can look at how you use each room and tell you whether you need extra circuits as well as extra power points.
Can you match my existing power points?
In many cases, yes. We work with the common brands and styles used in Brisbane homes. However, if an exact match isn’t available, we’ll show you close options, especially for visible spots like kitchens and living rooms.
Do new power points need safety switch protection?
Yes. New or altered power circuits need safety switch protection under the current rules. So we check your switchboard first and confirm the circuit is protected. If it isn’t, we’ll explain what’s needed.
Will you need to cut much out of the walls?
We keep cutting to the minimum. In fact, most new power points only need a small cut-out for the mounting bracket, and we run cable through the existing wall cavity where we can. Afterwards, any patching is kept neat and ready for paint.
Can you move a power point to a better spot?
Yes. If an outlet is in an awkward place, we can usually move it, as long as the cable route allows. First, we’ll go through the options on site. Then we’ll tell you about any patching or painting needed afterwards.
Do you do outdoor power point installation?
Yes. We install weatherproof outlets for decks, patios, pool areas, gate motors and gardens, so you can safely run outdoor fridges, BBQs, pumps and tools. Also, each one is rated for outdoor use and protected by a safety switch.
Why does my outdoor power point keep tripping the safety switch?
Usually it’s water. For example, a cracked cover, an indoor-rated outlet used outside, or one where the sprinklers hit it lets moisture in, and the safety switch trips. Therefore, we replace it with a weatherproof outlet, in a better spot if needed.
