Signs your lights need an electrician
Some lighting problems are just annoying. However, others point to a loose connection, water in a fitting or a failing circuit, and those need fixing before they get worse.
Lights trip the safety switch
Water in an outdoor fitting is a common cause. For example, in Bulimba the front lights kept tripping in wet weather because water had got into the sensor light.
Burning smell or scorch marks
Because a hot smell or brown marks around a light or switch mean a connection is overheating, switch it off and call us.
Switch crackling or warm
A crackling or warm light switch has a loose or worn connection inside. So stop using it until it’s checked.
Lights flickering
Flickering is often a dimmer that doesn’t suit LED globes. On a Norman Park job, the lighting fault came down to an old dimmer, so we fitted an LED-compatible one.
Sensor light playing up
A sensor light that stays on or won’t come on usually has a failed sensor, a break in the cable or the wrong setting. First we test it, then repair or replace it.
Old, dim fittings
Old fluoro battens, halogens and yellowed oyster lights are worth upgrading to LED, especially in kitchens and laundries.
Light sparking, smoking or hanging loose?
Switch it off at the wall, and turn that circuit off at the switchboard if it’s safe to do so. Then call us. If there’s smoke or fire, get out and call 000 first.

Lighting installation cost in Brisbane depends on the type of light, whether there’s already a light point, the ceiling and roof access, and whether you’re supplying the fittings. So we get a few details or look first, then give you one price for the install and testing. Nothing starts until you approve it.

Replacing a light fitting
Swapping an old fitting for a new one on the same point is the simplest job, because the cable is already there. Even so, we still check the connections and the mount.

What pushes the price up
For example, new light points with no cable, no roof access, raked or high ceilings, heavy fittings that need extra support, new switch positions, or long outdoor cable runs underground.

What keeps it down
Easy roof access, existing light points, and several lights done in one visit. Also, adding a fan or power points on the same trip saves a second call-out.
Outdoor lighting installation
Outdoor lights face sun, rain and humidity, so the fitting has to be rated for where it goes. For outdoor lighting installation, we fit weatherproof fittings, seal them properly, and run any underground cable in conduit with warning tape above it. We also check the circuit has safety switch protection. For example, in Cannon Hill we ran new underground conduit and cable to power a gate light.

How lighting installation works, step by step.

First, we talk through the room, the look you want and where the switches should go. Also, you can supply the lights, or we can suggest some.

Then you get one clear price for the install and the testing. Nothing starts until you say yes.

Install and wire
Next, we isolate the circuit, fix each light to solid framing, then run and connect the cable. For outdoor lighting installation, we use weatherproof fittings and conduit.

Test and tidy up
After that, we test every light, switch, dimmer and sensor. Finally, we clean up and take the old fittings away if you want.

Pendant light installation
Pendant light installation over benches and dining tables, as well as stairs and hallways. First, we fit a solid mount, even on raked ceilings, so heavy fittings hang straight and stay put.

Good to know
Is DIY light installation legal in Queensland?
No. In Queensland, installing or replacing a light fitting is electrical work, because it connects to your home’s fixed wiring. So it has to be done by a licensed electrical contractor. Changing a globe is fine, but DIY electrical work is illegal, it can affect your home insurance, and a badly fixed fitting can fall. You can check any electrician’s licence through WorkSafe Queensland. Ours is 90386.
Bathroom light installation and wet zones
Bathrooms have wet zones around the shower and the bath, and lights in those zones need the right IP rating. So we check where each light sits, then fit one rated for that spot. We can also add an exhaust fan while we’re in the ceiling.
Warm white or cool white?
Warm white feels softer, so it suits bedrooms and living areas. Cool white is crisper, so it suits kitchens, laundries and garages. Many LED fittings also let you switch between the two. If your lights flicker on a dimmer, the dimmer may not suit LED, and an LED-compatible dimmer usually fixes it. If you’re planning a renovation, that’s the easiest time to add light points, because the ceilings are open.

How much does lighting installation cost in Brisbane?

Do I need a licensed electrician to install a light in Queensland?
Yes, installing or replacing a wired light fitting is electrical work in Queensland, so a licensed electrician has to do it and test it. Changing a globe is fine. However, DIY wiring isn’t legal, and it can cause safety and insurance problems.
Can you install lights I’ve already bought?
Yes, we install plenty of customer-supplied lights. For example, in Sherwood we replaced seven fittings with lights the owner had picked out. Just check that outdoor lights are rated for outdoor use.
Can you hang a pendant light on a raked ceiling?
Yes, on a Springwood job, we built a custom angled timber base so the pendant hung straight on a raked ceiling. Heavy pendants and chandeliers also need a solid mount, so we check that first.
Do you install LED strip lighting under kitchen cabinets?
Yes, we fit the strip in a channel with a proper driver, in warm or cool white. For example, in Wakerley we installed 4 m of warm white LED strip under the kitchen cabinets.
Why do my LED lights flicker?
Often the dimmer doesn’t suit LED globes, or there’s a loose connection. Sometimes it’s the supply. In Tanah Merah, half the lights kept switching off and on because the lighting circuit was fed from the hot water tariff supply. So we test first, then fix the actual cause.
Do you do outdoor lighting installation?
Yes, we install sensor lights, floodlights, festoon lights and garden lighting, with weatherproof fittings and cable in conduit. We can also put garden lights on a timer or a PE cell, like the BBQ spike lights we set up in Bulimba.
Why does my sensor light trip the power when it rains?
Usually water is getting into the fitting or a connection. In Bulimba, water had got into a front sensor light, so we replaced it to stop the wet-weather tripping.
Do you do commercial lighting?
Yes, we replace and repair lighting in shops, offices and cafes. We also install and test emergency and exit lights.
Can you add a light switch or a dimmer?
Yes, we add and move switches, fit two-way switching, and install LED-compatible dimmers. In Norman Park, an old dimmer was behind a lighting fault, so we fitted an LED-compatible one.
