Signs your home needs a residential electrician
Some of these are just annoying. However, others point to old wiring, a failing switchboard or no safety switch at all, and those are worth having a residential electrician check.
Power or lights keep tripping
A safety switch that trips often, or one that has jammed and won’t reset, means something needs finding and fixing, not just resetting again.
Burning smell or scorch marks
A hot or burning smell near the switchboard or a power point means a connection is overheating, so switch it off and call us.
Cracked or discoloured power points
A cracked, hot or blackened power point is a fire risk. For example, on a Norman Park job we removed one with cracked rear plastics before it failed further.
No safety switch, or only some circuits covered
Newer homes have safety switches on the power point circuits, but in older homes the lighting and hot water circuits are often left unprotected, or there’s no safety switch at all.
Old ceramic fuses, no circuit breakers
A ceramic fuse board with no RCD protection is common in older Queenslanders and post-war homes, so it’s worth upgrading before it fails.
Flickering lights or a crackling switch
Flickering often comes down to a loose connection or a dimmer that doesn’t suit LED. However, a crackling switch should be checked before it’s used again.
Switchboard sparking, smoking or a burning smell?
Switch off at the wall, and turn that circuit off at the switchboard if it’s safe to do so. Then call us. If there’s smoke or fire, get out and call 000 first.

What a job costs depends on what it is. So a simple repair is usually quoted over the phone, while a switchboard upgrade or a renovation gets a look first, then one quote before anything is booked in. Nothing starts until you say yes.

Good to know
Old Queenslanders, ceramic fuses and old wiring
Brisbane has a real mix of housing, from character Queenslanders and post-war homes to modern townhouses and new estates, and the wiring often reflects the age of the house. Some older homes still have a ceramic fuse board, partial safety switch coverage, or wiring that has never been assessed. None of that is unusual. However, a burning smell, frequent trips, or a switchboard with no safety switch at all are worth having a home electrician check. If you’re planning a renovation, that’s also the easiest time to confirm the switchboard can handle the extra load.
Renting a home out, or managing one?
