What a renovation electrician checks before the build
Some of these decide what the renovation can include. So it’s worth knowing about them before the builder starts framing.
Old switchboard with no room
New kitchens and extensions add circuits. So an old board with ceramic fuses or no spare space often needs upgrading first.
Old wiring behind the walls
Queenslanders and older homes can still have old rubber or cloth-covered cable. Because the walls are open, a renovation is the time to test it and replace what’s failing.
No safety switches
Older homes often have circuits with no safety switch at all. So we add RCBOs for the new circuits, and for the existing ones if you want.
Kitchen appliance circuits
Ovens and induction cooktops need their own circuits, while dishwashers, fridges and microwaves need power in the right spots. So we plan them around your kitchen layout.
Bathroom wet zones
Lights, heat lamps and power points near the shower and the bath need the right rating and position. So we set them out before the tiler starts.

Renovation electrical costs depend on the number of new circuits and points, the switchboard, the state of the old wiring, and whether it’s a kitchen, a bathroom or a whole extension. So we look at your plans or the site first, then price the electrical rough in and the fit off together. Nothing starts until you approve it.

Kitchen and bathroom renovations
Most kitchen and bathroom jobs use the existing circuits plus one or two new ones, such as an oven or cooktop circuit. Therefore, the switchboard usually decides how simple it is.

What pushes the price up
For example, a switchboard upgrade, old wiring that needs replacing, a sub-board for an extension or granny flat, long cable runs, or asbestos in the old board, which needs a licensed removalist at extra cost.

What keeps it down
A clear plan before framing, walls still open for the rough in, and all the trades on one schedule. Also, fixing positions early avoids moving boxes after the plasterer has been.
Electrical rough in and fit off
The electrical rough in happens while the frames are open. We run the cables, fix the boxes for the switches, power points and lights, and set up the appliance circuits. Then, once the plasterer, tiler and cabinet maker are done, we come back for the fit off and fit the switches, power points, lights and appliances. Finally, we test every circuit and safety switch before handover.

Good to know
When should I book a renovation electrician?
Before the builder starts framing, ideally at the planning stage. Then the circuits and the switchboard are sorted early, and the electrical rough in fits into the build instead of holding it up. We also work with your builder, plumber and other trades, so everyone knows when the walls will be open.
Who handles asbestos in an old switchboard?
Older switchboards can have asbestos backing boards. If yours does, we coordinate a licensed removalist before the board is replaced. That’s an extra charge, and we’ll tell you with the quote.
What is an electrical rough in?
It’s the first stage of renovation wiring, done while the frames are open. We run the cables and fix the boxes for every switch, power point, light and appliance. Then the linings go on, and we come back to fit off. Because moving a box after plastering costs time, it’s worth confirming positions before the rough in. Also, if you want extra power points or ceiling fans, this is the time to add them.

Can you work with my builder?
Yes, we work to your builder’s programme and talk to them directly about the rough in and fit off dates. We also work around the plumber, the tiler and the cabinet maker.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade for my renovation?
Sometimes. A new kitchen or extension adds circuits, so an old board with ceramic fuses or no spare room may need upgrading. We check it at the quote stage, so it isn’t a surprise later.
What happens at the electrical rough in?
While the frames are open, we run the cables and fix the boxes for the switches, power points, lights and appliances. Then, after the linings go on, we come back to fit off.
How long between the rough in and the fit off?
It depends on your build, because the fit off waits for the plasterer, tiler, painter and cabinet maker. For example, in North Maclean we waited for the cabinetry and splashbacks before finishing the granny flat.
Can you add an oven and induction cooktop circuit?
Yes, most kitchen renovations need their own oven and cooktop circuits. For example, in Regents Park we installed new oven and cooktop circuits, plus power for the dishwasher, fridge and microwave.
Do you do bathroom renovation electrical work?
Yes, we fit IXLs, exhaust fans, wet-zone rated lights and power for LED mirrors. In Kuraby, for example, we wired two LED mirrors and new downlights during a bathroom renovation.
Can you wire a granny flat or an extension?
Yes, we wire new rooms, extensions and granny flats, including sub-boards where needed. We also check the supply and the switchboard first.
What if you find old wiring or asbestos?
We test old wiring and tell you what needs replacing, with photos and options. If the old switchboard has asbestos, we coordinate a licensed removalist, which is an extra charge.
Can I buy my own fittings?
